While the initial Watch Active seemed like a prototype, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 is evidence that Samsung is taking customer input to heart. The addition of LTE connectivity and a touch-sensitive bezel improves the user experience significantly. The smartwatch performs well in most areas. Just be sure your motivations are pure. While it might potentially track your fitness, it is not the most precise fitness watch available. Certainly not even close. Samsung’s app ecosystem is limited in comparison to the competition, and the blood pressure monitor is faulty. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 is a fantastic option for anyone looking for an alternate to Wear OS. Don’t buy it for the “active” features, which are ironic in retrospect.
Design and hardware
The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 may look very similar to the original Galaxy Watch Active at first glance, but there are actually a few significant improvements with the second-generation device. The case size of the watch has increased from 40mm to 44mm (mine is 44mm), and you can now get it in either stainless steel or aluminum. Of course the stainless steel version will feel more upscale in the hand than my aluminium one, but I really have no complaints about either.
The watch face you see will be proportional to the size of your watch case. The display on the 44mm Watch Active 2 is 1.4 inches in size, while that on the 40mm watch is 1.2 inches. The AMOLED display is sharp and colorful, and it is present in both models at the same resolution of 360 by 360. The contrast is excellent, the colours are true to life, and the viewing angle is wide. After all, it’s a Samsung watch.
Despite the 44mm diameter of the Galaxy Watch Active 2, it was never a hindrance. It weighs only 30g and has minimal bezels, making it ideal for use in active situations.
Fitness and health tracking
One of our greatest gripes with the first Samsung Galaxy Watch Active was, coincidentally, its ability to track activities properly. We found resting and active heart rate to be unpredictable, same with GPS, and floors climbed measurements to be wrong with the original gadget. Samsung integrated an improved heart rate sensor in the Watch Active 2. Resting heart rate measurements have been improved, but there’s still more work to be done with recordings during workouts. Also, floors ascended data are still all over the place.
For some reason, the altimeter Samsung uses in the Galaxy Watch Active 2 has a hard time producing correct values. I climbed my 15-stair staircase five times in a succession, and the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 indicated just one floor climbed. These are comparable results to what Kris reported with the first Watch Active.
